Swiss design meets running shoe meets performance: ON Cloudflyer

Running like on clouds - that's what Swiss running shoe manufacturer ON promises. We looked at a model: the cloudflyer.

    ON Running - the idea

Even running professional and plagued by the zipper of a runner, Olivier Bernhard seeks the solution to his problems. Unsatisfied with the commercially available running shoes, he used hi-glue to cut garden hoses under the soles. That was it! Together with the engineer David Allemann and Caspar Copetti he worked together until the first prototypes were ready to run in 2010. As early as February, they took home the coveted ISPO Brand New Award and, as a result, more and more runners were convinced by the idea of "Cloud Tec" cushioning. Soft on impact, like on clouds, but hard when pushed to release pressure. The shoes were literally torn from their hands when they presented them at various running events. From now ON went steeply.

    The cloud flyer

The Cloud Flyers is a lightweight stability shoe with a lot of cushioning. A long-distance shoe that is still agile and light at under 300 grams. With his 7mm blast and the rather hard cushioning he actually wears very comfortable.

    Workmanship and fit

Swiss precision - more is not to say for the very clean processing. The shoes are a bit big, so try a half size smaller. The long laces can be knotted well in various lacing techniques and do not go on the road. The heel is kept pretty good, despite wearing it a bit too big.

    test runs

The first runs with the shoe were then very getting used to. I run normally little dampened shoes, therefore, came to me Cloud Flyers * something "spongy" before, especially when the shape dwindled and the fatigue increased - so actually exactly in the area for which the long-distance shoe was developed. The feedback is still good, if not as direct as in Rennschlappen. However, when the terrain becomes a bit uneven or even stony, the spongy feeling intensifies again - and you also catch one or the other stone, which can hardly be found between the cloud elements. Incidentally, speed is not his strength, but he was not conceived for that either.

For me it is really comfortable in everyday life: I love to wear it in my job. Eight hours stand and go, in the Cloudflyer no problem and especially in the evening no pain from the knee down.

    Conclusion

Overall, a very good shoe with a proper compromise between cushioning and directness. I've probably just picked the wrong model for myself and my running habit, the Cloudracer will certainly suit me more. Intentionally, I chose a well-damped long-distance shoe to counteract the ever-recurring median arch pain. The shoe does that without question!
