    Autumn tour on the Nebelhorn

In the off-season you have the Edmund Probst house, the paths and peaks as good as on your own!

    Nebelhorn

Starting point is Oberstdorf (813m), which can be easily reached by bus and train. From the station we ran across the village towards Oytal. This valley extends for a long time into the mountains, but the path has hardly any slope and leads through an avenue, by the stream and past friendly cows and donkeys. After the Oytalhaus turn left up the glacier path to the Seealpsee (1628m), the deepest Allgäuer Alpsee (amazing 60m). Here you can breathe deeply, because most of the vertical meters are done! A little above there is the possibility to stop in a small alp and enjoy the magnificent view over the Seealpsee. It is only 15 minutes to the Edmund-Probst-Haus (1927m). However, the lookout bench on "Höfatsblick" keeps you from marveling at the steep mountain slopes. The Edmund Probst House is located at the ugly mountain station of the Nebelhornbahn, but still has a wonderful panoramic view of the mountains from the terrace. We park our rucksacks and use the early evening to catch a glimpse of the other side before sunset, towards Hintersteiner Tal (20min). In the cozy dining room we let the evening end with wheat and card games.

    Big and small thumb

After a fortifying breakfast we march to the Nebelhorn (2224m). Here it is extremely stormy, so we do not stay long and continue straight on the Via Alpina in the direction of Koblat. The path runs underneath the popular "Hindelanger Klettersteig" and we can comfortably watch the climbers. We pass the Koblatsee, the Laufbichelsee and climb over the white radiant rock. Then we climb up in serpentines to the Big Thumb (2280m). We continue to the little thumb (2197m). The last 20 minutes lead via a via ferrata (narrow ridge with wire ropes), where absolute sure-footedness and a head for heights are needed. You will be rewarded at the summit with the imposing view of the Allgäu Alps. We climb over the thumb saddle, past the "Türle" (small crevasse) and the Upper Nickenalpe to Hinterstein.

The Engeratsgundsee (1878m) is surrounded by green alpine meadows and delights with its turquoise clear water. The path continues into a small basin below the stallion. We are lucky and meet at least 5 groundhogs here. We are thrilled with the flora and fauna, en beautiful "Alpine Garden". But when they start to whistle loudly, we do not want to upset them and keep going fast. We pass the Upper Nickenalpe, the Lower Nickenalpe and the Möslealpe (all unmanaged) and walk through the dense mixed forest down to lonely meadows. There we are greeted by a herd of cows, happily walking across woods, meadows and rivers. In Hinterstein you can comfortably board the bus to Bad Hindelang or continue to Oberstdorf.

Conclusion: In the off season you have the Edmund Probst house, the paths and peaks as good as on your own! The descent over the "Törle" to Hinterstein is long, but also very lonely and with its flowery brook very idyllic.
